Valve Terminology Glossary
C
- Cv
- Flow coefficient — a measure of a valve’s flow capacity, describing the flow that passes for a given pressure drop. Kv is the metric equivalent. Used when sizing for throttling or control duties.
E
- End connection
- The method by which a valve joins the pipeline — for example flanged, wafer, threaded or butt-weld — selected to match the line, pressure rating and installation.
S
- Seat
- The sealing surface against which the valve’s closure member (disc, ball or gate) shuts to stop flow. Seat design and material influence the achievable shut-off and the suitability for a service.
